Best Psychologist in Dubai

Dubai Psychologist Profile Guide

The best psychologist in Dubai for you may or may not use the title Dr. The title blurs two professions, so a search for a psychologist doctor can mislead. The Valens Clinic settles the basic point in one FAQ: a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe, and a psychologist focuses on talk therapy and does not. The clinician profiles add the detail on degrees, licences and languages.

Is a psychologist in Dubai a doctor?

The word carries two meanings. In the medical sense, the clinic’s FAQ on psychiatrists and psychologists places the role with the psychiatrist. It says the two differ mainly in training. A psychiatrist can diagnose conditions and prescribe medication. A psychologist offers talk therapy and does not prescribe.

The roles overlap on diagnosis. Another FAQ on what a psychologist does says a psychologist assesses, diagnoses and treats through talk-based therapy and psychological testing. Many people add a psychiatrist when medication forms part of care, the clinic says.

What does Dr mean on a psychiatrist’s profile?

A medical degree. Several psychiatrists’ profiles list qualifications such as Doctor in Medicine, MBChB or Doctor of Medicine, alongside specialist qualifications in psychiatry. One profile lists a fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Another lists Arab Board certification in psychiatry.

The clinic’s FAQ on credentials adds one detail: its psychiatrists hold US, UK, European or equivalent certifications. A psychologist cannot prescribe, so the medical degree decides who handles medication.

What do the psychologist profiles list?

Each clinician profile has a Credentials section. Some of the clinic’s clinical psychologists list a PhD there, and others list a master’s degree in clinical psychology. Clinicians titled Psychologist list master’s degrees. The educational psychologist lists a PhD.

The profiles list degrees without ranking them. A PhD shows the training route a clinician took, and the other lines on the page say more about fit with your concern. The credentials FAQ describes the clinic’s psychologists as holding international experience and training, with extra certifications in specific recognised therapies.

Which titles go with which licence?

Each profile carries a licence line. At the time of writing, clinicians titled Clinical Psychologist list a Dubai Health Authority (DHA) licence number. Clinicians titled Psychologist list a Community Development Authority (CDA) number. The clinic’s FAQ on licensing says every clinician practising there registers with the relevant Dubai health regulator.

The site does not explain why the two titles carry different regulators. Ask the team what each licence covers.

What else does a profile show?

Most profiles also list professional associations, the therapies on offer and the languages spoken. Each says where you will meet the clinician: the Business Bay clinic or Young Valens on Al Wasl Road.

The therapy lines carry the most weight when you have a specific concern. One clinical psychologist’s profile lists psychodynamic psychotherapy, trauma, and loss and grief. Another lists CBT, schema therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy and exposure therapy. A reader with panic attacks and a reader grieving a parent would pick different profiles from the same team.

Which questions should you ask before you choose a psychologist in Dubai?

The clinic publishes no checklist, so here are three questions worth asking. Ask which of the listed therapies the clinician would use for your concern. Ask how much of their caseload involves people with the same concern. Ask how they would work with a psychiatrist if medication comes up, since a psychologist does not prescribe.

Email the clinic with the profile you prefer

Email info@thevalensclinic.ae with the name on the profile you like and a line about your concern. The clinic’s FAQ on scheduling says a coordinator works with you to find an appointment with the most suitable clinician for your schedule. The Valens Clinic operates under Dubai Health Authority (DHA) licensing, and its Jumeirah site holds Community Development Authority (CDA) approval.
