Frequently Asked Questions

01 What professionals diagnose and treat ADHD in the UAE?

ADHD is primarily diagnosed by psychiatrists in the UAE, who work closely with educational psychologists and neuropsychologists. These professionals collaborate to develop an accurate diagnosis and create a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to the individual’s needs.

02 Can ADHD be managed effectively?

Yes, ADHD can be effectively managed through a combination of approaches, including medications, lifestyle changes, behavioral therapy, and educational support. A tailored treatment plan that addresses individual needs is key to managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

03 ADHD Evaluation Process

Diagnosing ADHD requires an evidence-based approach, as many conditions share or mimic ADHD symptoms. An incorrect diagnosis could lead to ineffective treatment. The process includes a comprehensive psychiatric history, gathering collateral information from parents, teachers (for children), partners, and family members (for adults), and considering family history, symptoms, environment, and medical history. The assessment follows DSM and ICD criteria and is confirmed through standardized neuropsychological tests by experts to rule out other disorders and comorbidities.

04 What are the common symptoms of ADHD?

ADHD symptoms vary by individual and can evolve over time. They fall into two main categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Inattention symptoms include difficulty sustaining attention, making careless mistakes, disorganization, losing items, and forgetfulness. Hyperactivity and impulsivity may present as fidgeting, difficulty staying seated, excessive running/climbing, trouble playing quietly, being constantly “on the go,” interrupting others, and difficulty waiting for one’s turn.

05 How common is ADHD in the UAE?

ADHD prevalence worldwide ranges from 5% to 17.8%, according to the World Health Organization. In the UAE, research indicates a prevalence of approximately 3%. However, this figure might not fully capture the extent of ADHD in the country, as estimates can vary depending on the diagnostic tools and symptom criteria used.

Our normal working hours are from 8.30AM-5.30PM Sunday to Friday with Saturday being our day off. We are not able at this stage to offer a dedicated out of hours hotline. You will be provided with a mode of contact via email or whatsapp that will only be responded to in case of an emergency. Regardless, our default advice is for the patient to attend the nearest Emergency Department for immediate medical attention.

07 How do I talk to my employer or loved ones about my mental health treatment?

We provide reports and sick notes at the request of the employee and never the employer directly without consent. 08 How do I know if my therapist is the right fit for me?

Research suggests that one of the most important factor in therapy is the therapeutic relationship. This cannot be objectively measured but generally means that the patient feels safe to share as much as possible without being judged and also to receive feedback or advice. Often patients come with the predetermined idea that a certain person from a certain background, age, religion, gender is more suitable. We find that this not always the case. If you are not comfortable in therapy it is important you discuss with the therapist of even approach the medical director in our clinic for alternative suggestions.

09 What is your policy on confidentiality and privacy?

We fully abide by the DHA regulations in force in the Emirate of Dubai. Our clinicians and staff will not communicate with anyone else but the patient, unless the patient themselves authorizes contact. In case of an immediate emergency the treating clinician may choose to breach confidentiality but only with the relevant parties and with the strictly necessary information.

10 How do I know if I need medication for my mental health condition?

Many mental health conditions require medication or at least some form of pharmacological intervention. We advise you to book a consultation with one of our psychiatrists. Seeing a psychiatrist does not mean you will end up on medication. But at least you will be aware of your options.

13 How can I prepare for my therapy sessions?

You do not need to prepare for therapy unless you are provided with forms or questionnaires to complete. You should preferably come with the willingness to share and to listen. In certain forms of therapy such as CBT you may be asked to carry out ‘homework’ between sessions. These are as important as the therapy session itself.
